Growing up in a large household with my extended family, life in our tiny two-story apartment in Dorchester, Massachusetts was never short of activity. With over seventeen of us under one roof, responsibilities continuously piled up. Amidst the chaos, I rarely had the chance to spend time with my mom or any of the adults, except for Auntie Hong. She tirelessly cooked and cared for all nine children while the rest of the adults worked tirelessly to maintain a semblance of comfort in our lives.

Undoubtedly, living with so many people led to moments of stress and tension, but I always endeavored to ease the burden as much as possible. In the absence of the adults, I took it upon myself to manage household chores. I diligently hand-washed the mountains of dishes that accumulated in the sink, tackled overflowing laundry baskets, tended to my diabetic grandmother, who was confined to her bed due to her weak legs, and provided company. Additionally, I helped my younger brother and cousins with their homework and was the designated counselor, giving them advice on their curiosities of the world. Despite being the middle child among my cousins and siblings, I assumed the lion's share of responsibility.

Balancing my academic pursuits with the demands of home life was undoubtedly challenging. Still, I was determined to alleviate the stress on my parents, aunts, uncles, grandmother, and all the children. Though my efforts went uncompensated, the smiles on their faces at the end of a long, exhausting day were enough for me. It was a gratifying reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful rewards come from selflessly serving others.
