Ten thousand. That is the number of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) kits I packed and helped to deliver to 3rd graders during the pandemic. I volunteered daily with Macomb Intermediate School District Consultant Mr. Muzzin on this multi-month project. Filled with rich literature and an easy-to-use curriculum, the free kits exposed Macomb County youth to similar experiences that developed my unequivocal love for reading and the sciences. This project was not just about the kits; it was about demonstrating care and kindness. I appreciated the time and effort dedicated to this project and learned quite a bit about the logistics of a large-scale project. Daily tasks included prepping boxes, filling contents, taking inventory, packing, organizing for distribution, etc. I became a pro at using a pallet jack! Families accessed a website in which they could upload pictures of the kits used at home. The images of student learning provided much motivation throughout the project! Knowing that young students could continue learning at home during this vulnerable time was satisfying.

My journey in literacy service began long before the STEM project. At the age of six, my father and I installed a Little Free Library for my stepmother. This was not just a one-time project, but a lifelong commitment that I took on with great enthusiasm. I stocked the shelves with beloved titles and added extras like bookmarks, always reminding visitors of the joy and importance of reading. The library has been a resounding success, with approximately 2000 books finding new homes since its inception.

In 8th grade, I spoke at the Michigan Reading Association's Summer Conference and conducted writing workshops for kids. Throughout high school, I have dressed in sports jerseys and visited elementary schools to read as part of an Athletic Leaders are Readers initiative. I volunteer at McLaren Hospital's annual toy drive and senior citizen gifting event. I ensure the children and senior adults receive books as a holiday gift. Finally, I purchase books at local library sales and donate to senior residences. I attend to the seniors' needs and select titles with enlarged print or digital components that can be listened to. I try to be kind and make time to give back to my community. The satisfaction of making a difference in the community through these literacy projects is immeasurable. My goal is to act on a known issue in my community and state, impact the literacy rates in the area, and share my passion for reading.
